Yoga Therapy

One of the most exciting developments in the last few years is the integration of Western science with ancient Eastern wisdom traditions like yoga.  In the past decade, research has clearly documented the efficacy of yoga for numerous conditions including arthritis, back pain, cancer, depression, fibromyalgia, heart disease, insomnia, MS, scoliosis, and pain mangement in general.  Yoga therapy is a personalized approach using the various practices of yoga to address these conditions while also considering the unique needs and personality of each individual.

Current research also clearly documents how yoga works.  Benefits include:

                - Increased strength and flexibility
                - Improved balance and coordination
                - Increased ease and range of motion in joints
                - Decreased levels of perceived stress
                - Enhanced immune function
                - Lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure
                - Improved mental functioning
                - Relieves mental fatigue and anxiety
                - Decreased levels of perceived pain
                - Improved sleep patterns
                - Improved digestion and circulation
                - Improved mood states and emotions
                - Improved quality of life

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is typically conducted one-on-one or in small groups to develop a yoga program specific to each individual's needs.  This allows the teacher or therapist to develop a personalized approach to treating the whole person, and not just the "symptom or disease".  Various yoga practices are then integrated including gentle postures with props, breathing practices, imagery, relaxation, and meditation to calm and focus the mind.  Whether taught individually or in small groups, the focus is on relaxation and on linking movement to deep, rhythmic breathing.

Spirit-in-Motion Yoga currently offers private yoga therapy by appointment only (Call 403-320-6763)
